What is it for?
Wouldn't you like to turn back the clock and regain the fresh, youthful skin of a carefree teenager? Of course: we all would. But until science develops a real-life fountain of youth or time-travel technology, Accent offers the next best thing.
Accent RF Thermotherapy stimulates the production of new collagen and improves skin surface texture. Treatments with the Accent system are quick and do not require anaesthesia or a prolonged recovery time. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately. Best of all, Dual-layer RF Thermotherapy provides steady improvement with excellent, long-term skin tightening results.
On what parts of the body can Accent be used?
The Accent treatments can be performed to treat loose, wrinkled skin anywhere on the body. The procedure is frequently used to treat the thin, loose and crepe-like skin often found on the ageing face, neck and under the upper arms. It is also excellent for firming skin on the post-surgical or postnatal abdomen, chest, thighs or breasts.
The Accent is a device that uses radio frequency to penetrate the skin for the improvement in cellulite, reduction in tissue volume and skin tightening. This allows us to address body contouring without anaesthesia, surgery, pain or down-time.
How it works?
To reduce volume the Accent uses unipolar radio-frequency energy delivered to the subcutaneous fat to heat water molecules which pulls out the toxins and trapped fluids. Since the Accent uses your own water to reduce volume, the more internal water you have, the better the results. The overall benefit comes from the following:
- Deep dermal heating – this contracts, remodels and multiplies the collagen fibres to improve skin laxity and firmness
- Increased circulation and blood flow – strengthens tissue and improves texture
- Improved drainage of retained fluids from subcutaneous adipose tissue – causes a reduction in size
Does everyone get results and what can I expect?
Aesthetics is not an exact science and there are no guaranteed results with any treatment. Each person is different and results will vary from patient to patient. Some patients are very happy with a one inch loss while others may have a total volume loss of inches. For the Accent program to be successful you must be well hydrated with a positive lifestyle. In other words, your actions will directly affect your results. You must participate to get better results and to maintain those results. The typical protocol for volume reduction calls for 4 to 6 treatments approximately 2 weeks apart.
How long does it take to see Volume Reduction?
In many cases it is seen immediately after treatment. In some cases there is mild swelling that occurs which goes away in a few days. For some patients the volume reduction occurs toward the end of a series of treatments.
How long does it stay off?
This is dependent on you and how you choose to live. If you eat healthy and exercise, there is no reason for the volume to come back. As you age your metabolism slows and your collagen is reduced. Everything you can do to improve your lifestyle helps your overall look and health for the long term.
How does the Skin Tightening work?
The Accent uses radiofrequency energy that is delivery to the dermis to stimulate the production of collagen. As we age, we stop producing collagen and we begin to see everything from fine lines and wrinkles to skin laxity. This is a normal process and is accelerated with age along with previous and current sun exposure. The more collagen producing treatments a person has the less likely they are to see the effects of aging on the skin.
Does it hurt?
While pain tolerance is subjective, most people have little or no discomfort. Patients often describe the sensation as a “warm massage” and the risk of significant side effects is extremely low.
How long does it take to see improvement in tightening and how long does it last?
The rate at which collagen is produced varies depending on your overall health, age and sun exposure. Many people will see a noticeable improvement after one treatment. To improve and maintain the results, typically, 4 to 6 treatments are required. Most people stop producing collagen in their 30’s and the process of getting your body to start producing collagen again takes time. The good news is that it builds on itself – the more you do the more you get.
Do the treatments hurt and how long do they take?
The treatments do not hurt since the energy is delivered in constant motion over skin that has been lubricated with baby oil. The skin gently heats up over time and is massaged after every few 60 second cycles. This helps to move the toxins and trapped fluids to the lymphatic system. The treatment time is dependent on the area(s) treated and how many areas are treated. Please expect 30-60 minutes per treatment.
What is the process?
The first step is the consultation. You will need to fill out a health history and unless you only want to work on your face or neck, we usually do a full body consultation. The examination is to evaluate the areas that bother you. Recommendations will be made to help you get the look you want. You will then be photographed for better evaluation of pre/post treatment results. We usually see hydration increase as weight and body fat decrease. We will also take measurements from time to time to check your volume reduction.
Before and After Photos
IF YOU CHOOSE TO PROCEED HERE ARE A FEW IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
It is very important that you take an active role in your treatment plan. No surgical or non-surgical treatment lasts over time if you do not actively participate in the requirements needed to maintain your results.
If you are being treated for volume reduction it is critical that you drink a lot of water. From a general health status you live in a desert and you are probably dehydrated. This is not only internally unhealthy, but also accelerates the aging process of your skin. We ask that you drink at least 3 litres of water per day. If you are dehydrated you may not get the required results. The results will always be better if you are hydrated. In the first study people who drank 2 litres of water per day for one year lost an average of 5 kilos. In the second study 100% of the participants that started the day by drinking 2 large glasses of water while also walking lost abdominal fat.
Please remember that drinking coffee is not drinking water – in fact coffee along with alcohol, soft drinks and other caffeine products will dehydrate you. If you drink a gallon of water but have 2 cups of coffee for breakfast, a diet coke during the day and a glass of wine with dinner your end result is far less than a gallon of water.
We also recommend some form of exercise with good nutrition to help reduce your calorie intake while increasing your body’s ability to burn calories. If you are interested in a medical weight loss program we will set up a consultation for you with our associate practitioner Errol Denton.

Q: If I have a metal implant can I be treated?
A: You cannot be treated if the implant is near the treatment area.
Q: If I have a copper IUD can I be treated?
A: Yes, but not over the lower abdomen for volume reduction. Other treatments like skin tightening or hair removal can still be performed.
Q: If I have an implanted hormone pellet can I be treated?
A: Yes, but we stay a minimum of 5 inches away from the pellet.
Better results will be obtained if you:

2) Eat healthy and with restraint
3) Increase water intake – minimum 3 litres per day

Frequently Asked Questions:
1) How does the Accent treatment affect the lymphatic system, liver, kidneys, etc.
The treatment may increase the activity of the lymphatic system, draining excess fluids out of the body. Also, the treatment may increase the body’s metabolism, especially if the treatment is on the body.
2) Why are treatments spread out 2 weeks apart? What happens to the body in between?
Between treatments there is collagen remodelling and connective tissue formation. There is also a release of biological factors that result in tissue repair and realignment, a process that causes the tissue to tighten. Also, because the body’s metabolism is also affected, the best results do not appear immediately, but over a period of time.
3) How important is hydration before and after the treatment? Will drinking caffeine or alcohol really decrease the effectiveness of the treatment?
A patient needs to be well hydrated at the time of treatment because of the interaction between RF and the water molecules in their tissue. Caffeine and alcohol can cause dehydration. It is also recommended to continue a hydration regiment after treatment to maximise results.
4) How does the body process the waste from the large volumetric loss during treatment?
In general this waste is processed through metabolism and the lymphatic system (similar to the process that occurs when you exercise).
5) Will the results last longer with an increased number of treatments?
We have found on an average, patients need 4-6 treatments with maintenance at 6 month intervals. Most patients will see a marked improvement after one treatment.
6) Can we treat different treatment areas on a weekly basis?
This is not an issue; however it is not recommended that more than 2 areas are treated in the same week.
7) Is it possible to have any other spa procedures on same day as an Accent treatment?
Avoid any procedure that may increase the temperature of the area treated. In other words, the patient should avoid saunas, hot baths, Jacuzzi and excessive exercise.
