Sebaceous Cyst (Steatoma)
A small retention of sebum under the skin that is usually blocked by an overgrowth of surface skin is called a sebaceous cyst. The size of the cyst can vary from a pea to an egg, and the areas most affected are those where there are more sebaceous glands, i.e. face, chest, scalp and back, although sometimes also appearing on the underarm. Cysts may have an open or a closed top and may need medical removal.
They can be excised, which is a fairly simple procedure, and can usually be carried out at the GP surgery, they can also be treated successfully with electrolysis. The needle is inserted into the sebaceous cyst a number of times and Thermolysis current is dispelled and held in the skin overgrowth. Immediately following this pus may be able to be excised from the nodule however this is not always the case and apart from generalised erythema the nodule may not look any different. Over the next week or so the nodule should reduce in size, however the nodule may need further treatment and successful treatment can not always be guaranteed.
